Ferns of the Tropical Rainforest

Tropical rainforests — the Amazon basin, Central African lowlands, Southeast Asian archipelagos, and Pacific island chains — are the global epicentre of fern diversity. Warm temperatures, near-constant humidity, and high rainfall create conditions in which ferns can grow to spectacular proportions, evolve extraordinary forms, and occupy every available niche from forest floor to canopy top. For any fern enthusiast, the tropical rainforest is the ultimate reference point.

Growth Forms: Beyond the Ground

What makes tropical fern communities so visually striking is the range of growth forms on display:

  • Terrestrial ferns: Growing in the soil of the forest floor, often in dense colonies where light filters through canopy gaps.
  • Epiphytic ferns: Anchored to tree trunks, branches, and even other plants — accessing moisture and nutrients from rain, mist, and decomposing organic matter.
  • Hemiepiphytic ferns: Starting life in the soil but eventually climbing trees, or vice versa.
  • Aquatic ferns: Floating on or growing within bodies of standing or slow-moving water.

Standout Tropical Fern Varieties

Staghorn Fern (Platycerium spp.)

Perhaps the most iconic of all epiphytic ferns, Staghorn Ferns produce two distinct frond types: sterile, shield-like "nest" fronds that clasp the host tree and capture debris, and fertile "antler" fronds that extend dramatically outward and bear spores. Native to tropical Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America, they are highly prized by collectors.

Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus)

This striking epiphyte forms a rosette of broad, undivided, glossy fronds that funnel rainwater and falling debris into a central "nest" — hence the name. Found throughout tropical Asia and the Pacific, it is one of the most adaptable tropical ferns and tolerates lower humidity than many species, making it an excellent houseplant.

Tree Ferns (Cyathea and Dicksonia spp.)

Tree ferns are the giants of the fern world. Supported by fibrous trunks (technically not wood but compacted root matter), species like Cyathea cooperi and Dicksonia antarctica can reach heights of 5–15 metres. Their arching, feathery fronds can span several metres. Tree ferns are found in humid tropical and subtropical forests across the Southern Hemisphere and parts of Asia.

Rabbit's Foot Fern (Davallia spp.)

Named for their distinctive fuzzy, creeping rhizomes that spill over the edges of pots or tree branches, Davallia ferns are charming epiphytes from tropical Asia. The rhizomes are covered in pale, hair-like scales that resemble — quite convincingly — a rabbit's or squirrel's foot. Fronds are typically finely divided and lacy.

Cocomo Fern and Related Varieties

Within the diversity of tropical ferns, varieties cultivated under popular trade names like "Cocomo" represent selected forms prized for their compact habit, unusual frond texture, or striking coloration. These are often selections or hybrids derived from genera such as Nephrolepis, Microsorum, or Asplenium, bred specifically for their ornamental qualities and adaptability to indoor cultivation.

Adaptations to Rainforest Life

Tropical ferns have evolved remarkable adaptations to their challenging environments:

  1. Water-shedding fronds: Smooth, waxy surfaces prevent waterlogging during heavy downpours.
  2. Drip tips: Pointed frond tips channel excess water away from leaf surfaces, reducing fungal growth.
  3. Velamen-like rhizome sheaths: In epiphytic species, root coverings rapidly absorb atmospheric moisture.
  4. Nest structures: Basket-shaped frond arrangements trap organic debris to create their own nutrient supply.

Growing Tropical Ferns at Home

Many tropical ferns make superb houseplants, particularly in homes with naturally high humidity. Key requirements include:

  • Temperatures consistently above 15°C (ideally 18–25°C)
  • Indirect or filtered bright light — no harsh direct sun
  • Humidity above 60% — a humidifier is helpful
  • A well-draining epiphytic or airy potting mix
  • Regular misting of the substrate (not directly on sensitive fronds)

Tropical ferns reward attentive care with lush, dramatic growth that brings genuine rainforest atmosphere into any space.
